eMusic Downloads for July 2007

July 2, 2007 12:50 by frank

This month theme is the world of jazz. No particular reason really. I just don't have much jazz but I enjoy listening to it so I decided to broaden my knowledge in the subject. Most of what I downloaded could be considered the "classic" artists but the albums are kind of an unknown to me. Most of them are rather recent releases (not recent recordings but re-releases) and mostly compilations.

Artist: Sara Gazarek
Album: Return to You
eMusic Genre: Jazz (Vocal)
Total Songs: 14, Total Songs Left: 36

I actually went to listen to this album and accedently clicked on the download link. I hope I like it because I'm clueless as to what it sounds like. Sometimes suprises are nice.

Artist: Chet Baker
Album: Chet Baker In New York
eMusic Genre: Jazz (Bebop)
Total Songs: 7, Total Songs Left: 29

The jazz trumpet player with some facinating stories. He's been kicked out of countries and beaten up after drug deals. Today (July 2) is "Chet Baker Day" in Oklahoma. Go figure. Wikipedia.

Artist: Thelonious Monk
Album: The Best of Thelonious Monk
eMusic Genre: Jazz (Bebop)
Total Songs: 10, Total Songs Left: 19

From wikipedia: "He was also noted for the fact that at times he would stop playing, stand up from the keyboard and dance in a counterclockwise fashion, ring-shout style, while the other musicians in the combo played."

Artist: Herbie Hancock
Album: Jammin' with Herbie Hancock
eMusic Genre: Jazz (Classic)
Total Songs: 6, Total Songs Left: 13

A jazz pianist that has also embraced rock, funk and soul music. He is also the head of the "Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz". The pedia.

Artist: The Polyphonic Spree
Album: The Fragile Army
eMusic Genre: Indie Pop
Total Songs: 12, Total Songs Left: 1

I didn't want to use all of my downloads in one genre so I decided to check out The Polyphonic Spree's new album. I've seen a few good reviews and I've always thought they had potential in my collection. Their past albums haven't done it for me but maybe this one will.

Hmm... I'm not sure what to do with that one last download... I'd hate to waste it.
